This summer, the Association for Global Debate is hosting a Public Forum debate tournament in Shanghai, China from July 26-27, 2016 at Wellington College International Shanghai.
- Debate Format: Public Forum. The most popular style of High School debate in the USA. With 2 speakers on each team, 2 teams in each debate and a pre-released topic.
- Schedule: Free training session with coaches from the AGD and Harvard College Mentors for Urban Debate evening of the 25th.
On the 26th: 4 preliminary rounds of debate where everyone takes part.
On the 27th, elimination rounds beginning with Octofinals.
- Registration Fee: Divided into an early phase, and regular phase.
The Early phase registration fee is ¥800 RMB (130 USD) per student. The Early Phase Registration Deadline is Friday, June 10th, 2016.
The Regular Registration fee is ¥1000 RMB (160 USD) per student. Registration for the tournament ends on Friday, July 1st, 2016.
These fees include pay for our independent judges, so schools do not have to provide any judges.
It does not include lunch and accommodation costs, though those are available for an additional fee.
- Who can compete? All experience levels and ages are welcome. As well as being competitive this tournament will focus on feedback and training. The only requirement is that you are in high school or middle school, or graduated within the last 6 months.
The Association for Global Debate is proud to announce our AGD Shanghai Invitational, co-organized with Wellington College International Shanghai and Harvard College Mentors for Urban Debate.
The AGD is a support network of passionate debaters, organizers, teachers, and judges. AGD strives to connect high school debating events, leagues, and societies to resources and experts, providing free academic and organizational resources for debate organizers. You may be familiar with the AGD’s partner league, the National High School Debate League of China, an ESL debate league that hosts regional debate tournaments in 33 cities across China. In the past, the AGD co-organized invitational tournaments at the Canadian International School of Beijing and Dulwich College Beijing and supported competitions in Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Ulaanbaatar, Singapore, and Daejeon.
The Shanghai Invitational will provide attending teams from across East Asia with an educationally rich, professionally judged, and competitively intense debating experience. The competition is open to both international school and local Chinese school students in high school and middle school.
Among the excellent guest judges include coaches from Harvard College Mentors for Urban Debate, a US national champion, a former Chief Adjudicator of the Australasian Championship, and a former American national debate runner-up. In order to prepare students to debate at their highest extensive training will be held on the Friday night before the tournament.

All elimination round participants and the top speaker will receive a trophies and all participants will receive a participation certificate.
